Kiwirrkurra is to the north of the other communities of the Ngaanyatjarra group and is home to Pintupi people.
It has had something of a separate recent history to the other communities. The people did not experience ‘first ‘contact’ until around 1960 at which time they left for, or were taken to, the settlement of Papunya in the Northern Territory. Fortunately they were able to return fairly soon, in the 1970s, with most of their traditions and social groups intact. Because of its positioning, Kiwirrkurra is one of the remotest communities in the country and is serviced mainly from Alice Springs.
